Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA)Philippines - World's Second largest Archipelagic StateThe Philippines Coast Guard Auxiliary is a non-government organization that has a military structure that is parallel to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). Both are under the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC). The PCGA has a volunteer membership of approximately 19,000 men and women nationwide. The Coast Guard Auxiliary assists the PCG in the enforcement of maritime laws, sea safety and search and rescue, marine environment protection and preservation, youth development and humanitarian service. The organization is committed to assisting the PCG in securing and promoting safety of life and property at sea and in the protection of the marine environment. Republic Act 5173, otherwise known as the Philippine Coast Guard Law, mandates the creation of the Philippine Coast Guard which shall enforce all applicable laws on the high seas and territorial waters of the Philippines. The fact that the Philippines is an archipelago country with more than 7,107 islands scattered over its maritime jurisdiction, makes the mission of the Philippine Coast Guard more challenging. “To accomplish its mandated task, the PCG undeniably needed an ally. The creation of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary gave the PCG more than that. The PCGA has become a comrade and a brother. It has unselfishly given the much needed support in search and rescue operations, in protecting the marine environment, and in the promotion of youth development particularly the Sea Scouting Movement.”
