PCGA 505th Squadron Sponsored Kayaking Event

On the 14th of December 2009 at 14:00, friends and members of the Squadron are planning a sponsored kayaking event to raise funds for first aid and rescue equipment.

The recent flooding in Manila and the northern Philippines has highlighted the need for community groups like ours to be prepared. All the money from sponsorship will be used to buy rescue equipment such as large first aid kits and oxygen equipment to benefit the whole community. If you would like to sponsor a member, contact them directly or through the Squadron at pcga505thsquadron@gmail.com

Rescue Equipment

First Aid kits will be used for both marine rescues and local emergencies. Most of the squadron are either first aid instructors or first aiders and some are instructor trainers, and often get called to help. If we raise sufficient funds we will place 3 large kits along side the AEDs donated by the Puerto Galera Classic Club U$100~U$250 each

Oxygen equipment can be used for both diving and non-diving emergencies. We will need to buy a demand style regulator (for breathing casualties) as well as a free-flow non-rebreather mask for weak or non-breathing casualties. A portable oxygen tank completes the system U$575+

Professional backboards are waterproof, light and float. Extras include a head restraint system and straps. U$170+

Handheld marine radios allow us to communicate with rescue boats and for the emergency team to stay in contact while still allowing them to be mobile U$160 each

Water rescue equipment allows for in water rescues. These can include rescue tubes (right), throw ropes and rescue cans U$30~U$50 per item

Rescuer safety is a major concern. Personal equipment can include a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) ($85~U$165) that allows the rescue to swim comfortably ; rescue knife (U$25) ; PFD light (U$10) ; waterproof lights (U$20 ~ U$85) and in the case of flood recues a light kayak-style helmet ($30)

The Wishlist - other larger items can be bought if we raise enough money. These items would allow us to respond to a larger range of emergencies and could include an inflatable boat (U$2000+) for flood rescue and assistance, base station radio, power supply and antenna (U$320), police and fire frequency radio (U$200), marine mammal sling for assisting with stranded dolphin and whales ($200) etc.... We will also be keeping a maintenance fund for replacing lost and damaged items.

Route Map

We are planning two routes. Route A - approximately 12km and Route B approximately 14.5km. Both routes will be from Sabang to Escarceo Point, around to Puerto Galera - a short hop by jeepney to Puerto Galera Pier for a short drinks break. Route A then continues straight across the bay and back to Sabang, while route B will cross the Sandbar on Boquette Island, past Halige and Long beach and then back to Sabang.
